One of the longest and most famous strikes in this country’s history started in 1966, when Aboriginal workers went on strike at cattle stations in the Northern Territory. Workers who walked off the giant Wave Hill station, including many Gurindji people, set up a strike camp on their land. The Wave Hill lease belonged to Lord Vestey, owner of the biggest cattle company in the world. The epic struggle that followed was crucial in the development of the Aboriginal Land Rights movement across the country.

Tanya McConvell, who lived in the Gurindji strike camp during the 1970s, will give a first hand account of this extraordinary struggle.
